We're proud to welcome the debut release on Monotonik from Stefan Ternemar, the Swedish artist also known as S.T. 'Emotions In A Box' is Stefan's first set of songs released anywhere outside his own webpage, and it's a fitting introduction to his bold, melodically strident idm electronics. First off would be 'Downtown', almost Huelsbeck-ian in its wish to get straight down to brass tacks and blast you with carefully considered catchiness, heaping layer upon layer of gorgeously synthetic sounds...

Welcome to Monotonik's brand new year, courtesy of a debut release (or is it?) from Finn and self-proclaimed cosmic superspy, Aleksi Virta. He fearlessly busts out this supremely accomplished album of jazzy, dubby electronics, originally released on a scandalously limited, horrendously collectible 100-copy sold-out CDR edition, and now, thankfully available to the general public via the wonders of the Internet. So basically, we're looking at everything from the headnodding organ jam of 'Nebulae...

We're absolutely delighted to put out a third release from Swedish electronic artist Bliss, aka Henrik Jose, over a year after his well-received ' It's Not The Sweetness... ' EP. Since then, he's collaborated with music video directors Pleix (Basement Jaxx, Plaid, Futureshock) on an experimental video, while continuing to work on new material, but shines out his late 2003 vintage in 'Goodbye Brain, Hello Heart EP', a shimmering block of entirely instrumental sound produced in his Lund studio...

None other than the don Mortimer Twang himself alerted us to a whole album of Swedish artist Qeshi's music floating out there in the ether, and when we asked the artist himself nicely if we could release it on Monotonik, he kindly assented. But who's Qeshi? Currently studying in Japan, you may have heard of him from his two tracks that were featured on one of Lee 'Metamatics' Norris' 'Cottage Industries' compilations on the excellent Neo-Ouija label, as well as his Flash videos that seems to be...

A long, long time in the making, U.S. artist Troupe presents his first EP for Monotonik, 'It's Really Pretty Simple After All', a plain spectacular mix of demo-scene inspired electronica, soaring melodies, and beautiful vocals. Imagine, if you will, an American who has grown up and been musically influenced by the greats of the Amiga demo-scene - which this label itself was birthed from in 1996. Then mix in transcendent vocals reminiscent of favorite Monotonik releases like Bliss, and you get...

This time, a Monotonik debut for Finnish graphic artist and musician Flutterspot, and pretty much his first music release anywhere, with the gorgeous electronic tones of 'Labmat'. What do we like about this? Well, for starters, 'Daily Sway Of Everything (That You Touch)' is satisfyingly chunky, before 'Sky So My' segues into some smartly rotating beats. Then, there's 'Liihko Hymn', which is layers and layers of sound in an almost shoegaze fashion, but with firm rhythms layered on top, before...

We here at Monotonik vehemently enjoy mixing up the brand-new idm goodness with some beeptastic sinewaviness from back in the day. And this sublime selection is the first in a series highlighting the little-known Commodore Amiga chiptune format,  AHX , which stands for 'Abyss' Highest Experience', and was a gorgeous effort to resurrect C64-style synthetic tunes later in the Amiga's life. The debut release from Canada's contemplative, indielectronic Oveloe , aka Charles Bisaillon, who's previously released an excellent EP on net.label Kikapu , shows a beautifully phrased grasp of strangely retro-sounding, but absolutely not bleep heavy electronics. Soulful, considered, and intelligent, it makes the weirdest sense to us. As for the individual songs, 'Transistor Love', the first track, allows a throbbing backbeat drift and a plaintive, multi-tiered lead, before seguing into an...

We found Datassette after he linked to Monotonik from his own artist website. Fortunately, it turns out that he hearts us, and we heart him, since the UK-based artist with the retro-hardware themed pseudonym cuts up a lovely mix of previous Monotonik artists like Vim! and Braces Tower, alternating funky electronica with the geekier bleep end of the spectrum, but coming out all wine and roses in the originality stakes. Finnish old-school Amiga demo scene legend Aleksi Eeben, aka Heatbeat, has never really let up on the composition, but has, rather wonderfully, regressed in his choice of hardware over time, from Amiga, through Commodore 64, to Vic-20, with sideways glances to the Game Boy. As we edge into summer, we're proud to give further exposure to a gorgeous album submitted to Monotonik late last year from James Kirsch, aka General Fuzz, and the truly spectacular chill-out electronic that is 'Soulful Filling'. Having grown up in Newton, MA, General Fuzz is happy to make his home in the San Francisco Bay Area, and he recruited a number of talented local live musicians to fill out the electronic sounds on this charming full-length album. (In fact, his website has a detailed...

So, we made it - '10 Years Of Monotonik - The Mix' is testament to that. It's hard to believe that it was in early 1996 that we first started up our net.label Mono - initially as a .MOD-only label, since this was before the days of MP3s (and, indeed, of very wide use of the Internet.) What a long way we've come since then. The first couple of years, for those who recall it, actually had individual Commodore Amiga-based BBSes distributing our material as 'official distros', before FTP sites such...

We're delighted to welcome a return for Finnish artist Teemu Kiiskila, aka Ernesto Aeroflot, whose 'Oll Tolk'n' no Ding Atcheev'd' album we released back in 2003, and who is a veteran of other netlabel releases on Commie and Kikapu under multiple aliases. This time round, he's back with an entire album of wonderfully diverse electronics, 'Strogloy - Everything Within', which we're very pleased to be putting out on Monotonik. One of the keys to Ernesto Aeroflot's charms, at least in our eyes, is...

In the late '90s, Monotonik - an online free to download 'net.label' founded in 1996 and largely releasing .MOD 'tracker' files made in Amiga and PC formats, expanded to release in a brand new format - the MP3. Drawing from artists worldwide linked by the Internet, and influenced by the rise of melodic, downtempo electronics from labels like Warp, Rephlex, and FAX, this first compilation picks some of the best releases originally available via Monotonik in 1999 and 2000. Spanning classic early...

From the loopy original on Mono comes a slightly more ordered, just as loopy, Monotonik remix, courtesy of Zyad... mm, thanks for making it make.. more sense? As if sense was ever a feeling that's required for living chez Monotonik. Round and round and round it goes, where it stops, nobody knows. Make way for the main contenders..

A long time coming, the third Monotonik release from Chromatic Flights, aka Florida's Kyle Wyss, debuts after some heavy buzz for his main project, the two-man band Blind Man's Colour, online. In fact, with none other than Kanye West linking his Blind Man's Colour material and the band signed to Kanine Records (Grizzly Bear, Mommy And Daddy), we're delighted to be continuing to put out his solo material for Monotonik fans. Continuing from his first and second free releases on Monotonik,...

Things have been slowing down a little at Monotonik HQ recently. We think it's something to do with just how crowded the netlabel scene has got - with literally thousands of labels, how is anyone going to find just one? Fortunately, we've got a good idea of how to do it - just release stellar track from awesome Monotonik stalwarts. And this method is getting kicked off via Beak's 'Hard Nights', the fourth release from the awesome guitar-electronics spaz on Monotonik since his epochal 2003...

This is, believe it or not, the first Monotonik release for Kuu (formerly known as Substance, and definitively known as Finland's very own Joonas Vahamaki) since 1999 (!). But after a 7 year absence, we're delighted to welcome him back to the fold with the awesome 'Ioplus EP', 4 tracks of beautifully crunchy IDM. Since we last released music from him, he's done a bunch of neat work for various labels, most recently returning to the breakbeat hardcore massif with fellow Finn Niko Virta and their...

So we thought - who would be the best people to pick the best ever AHX tunes? Why, we went straight to the...

The long-awaited mixes from the number one scene luddite are finally HERE! Yes, the first of Subi's retro DJ sets is upon us. We hope you like. The general idea is to do a few of these, grouping by type. This time around we're concentrating on the proto-hardcore European brutalism sound that started when Joey Beltram came up with "Mentasm" and T99 turned its famous stab into an unholy racket on "Anastasia". So, not quite into the classic period yet, but certainly getting...

Mm, another track by the quiet man himself, and it's another gorgeous one. Mellow trippiness, as they say, doesn't just come by laying down on a lazy afternoon and staking it out. You need to know the slow-motion science of notes not played and places not visited. You need to know when not to.

A Monotonik debut for Brighton, UK-based electronic artist Northcape, then, with the sublimely mellow 'Some Bright Valley', all chilled-out strings and gently departing sunsets. Previously having debuted a couple of self-released albums, this first netlabel release starts out with the cutely meandering 'Red Panda', before moving on to the even more gorgeously pastoral, almost triphop-flecked 'A Part Of The Forest'. Also in there - 'Low Lying Mist' and EP closer 'On The Hill', which uses smart...

Another debut, then, and this time an American practitioner of the dark idm arts, in the form of Ann Arbor, MI-based Dead Eros. Monsieur Eros has run his own Music Is For Assholes label for some time, hangs with the Ghostly International chaps, but produces a distinctly contrasting output to anything they might put out - from light, sinewave-strewn idm to dark, foreboding ambient. Thus, 'When EP' is three pieces of brightness and one chunk of shadow, with lead track 'When We Are Home'...

Monotonik rounds out 2007 with a bit of a gem - a free digital release of the super-rare Pliant mini-CD 'Musical Endeavor', the quirky video-game inspired electronica blast originally released on New York-based label Systorm Technologies back in 2000. What do you need to know about this? Well, the super-perky 9 track, 18 minute release is chronicling a fictional video game of some kind, and from the dynamic, spider-bass infused 'Title', it's clear that you're being taken through the game in...

We be back, and it's a long-awaited guest release from linus/phd. One of mono's favourite artists, linus has gone ahead and donated us a couple of wicked new tracks. We're also re-releasing one of his very best releases on phase distortion ("stoopid interlude"). The reason we're doing this is firstly because we adore the tune, and secondly because we think there's a lot of people who listen to mono who haven't got round to listening to phd yet - so we're giving it a different (wider?)...

A new EP from a brand new artist, Icelandic bringer of non-tranquility Vektrex, and whilst "Jacket From Planet Pluto" is an eloquent electro-ish track with a sneaky 'masters-of-triphop' sample and urgent, clicking percussion, the crazed beeps of "Perfect Pitch" bring to mind a NES game gone horribly, horribly wrong. Timestretching chip-chords and pitchbending sinewaves? Yikes, call the Game Genie right now!

After numerous plaudits for the first EP Monotonik released from US-based Grandma , including 'Net-Audio Release of the Month' in cult German paper-magazine De:Bug , we were keen to press on and put out some more material from the 15-year-old prodigy, who we think is one of the most amazing artists we've ever released on Mono. This time, we've got a 4-tracker showcasing more of his diverse and eccentric talent, put together with just an old PC and rickety microphone, as before, but radiating...

The latest release for guitar and beat-strewn idm artist Beak on Monotonik, following the 'Amoral Mayor Earwig EP' back in 2004 and 'El Hacedor EP' in 2005, the 'Bishop Whitney EP' continues his extremely unique mix of strongly played guitar, acoustic noises and cut-up percussion in fine, fine style. This time, we start out with the characteristic plucked freneticism of 'Context Clues', before seguing into the languid crawl of 'Teach Texas Manner', further showcasing his totally individual,...

It's been in the queue for quite some time, but we're proud to finally debut 'A Lonely Gust Of Wind' from Canadian artist Vincent Fugère, once known as Vizion but nowadays known as Muhr - a 3-track ambient EP of stark beauty and obtuse goodness. We start off, naturally enough, with 'Part 1', which drifts in and out almost entirely for the first half or so of the track, before laying into some repeated ambient phrased, before 'Part 2' starts to swell a little, laying on the almost orchestral...

This third-party compilation is one of three put together by an unknown person and spread on P2P networks, and acts as a 'best of' for Monotonik. We decided it has excellent track choice (check out early tracks from Whiskas and Jiva in particular), plus a number of tracks only normally available in .MOD form as .MP3s, so we've made it an official release and added it to our catalog - the Internet and freely distributed music comes up with cool ideas like this if you're lucky. Danish idm musician Delayscape has been prolific since his debut 'Everybody Drops' release for Monotonik in 2006, with releases on netlabels including Acrylik, Musicartistry and Cold Room, and we're delighted to welcome him back to us with the funky, borderline squelchy electronics of 'VCOs or DCOs'. Already out on 'limited dub plate' lha-archive release, but only available to the very luckiest of Amiga owners, this storming intelligent drum+bass track now comes out via official Mono methods. Turn those speakers _up_, sonny, before we come round and tell you to turn them up some more. And watch out for a "Minimal Response EP" from the utterly charming blonde Substance-abuser.

More rewording and reordering as Substance takes elements from two previous releases (Tek's mp3 "Benedict" and Prob+Ebb's "Stylez") and merges and melds to come up with this mellifluous hybrid. It's fun to play with sounds, isn't it? Watch out for a simultaneous/near-simultaneous Malik remix of "Stylez" on Theralite (http://pigforce.warande.net/theralite), incidentally.. mmm, synchronicity can be so constructive, hm?

Mono's final release of 1997, most likely, and an appropriately.. nice one. :) Vim! really kicks the technique unlike anyone else, and here's another example of that fact. I mean, _what_ is going on here? Can anyone tell us? It's Aphex Twin meeting Tim Follin on a deserted road and beating the crap outta each other, we guess. Stand well clear and watch for the pyrotechnics. :)
